Seattle Washington Adult Family Homes
In Washington State, Adult Family Homes,
(
also referred to as Adult Foster Homes),
are traditional homes in neighborhood
settings where owner, resident manager and
staff are responsible for the safety and
well-being of senior (typically) adult
residents. The home census is limited by
Washington State law to 2-6 residents.
All Washington State Adult Family Homes
are required to provide a room, meals,
laundry and adequate 24/7 staffing. (The
Washington State Department of Social and
Health Services concedes that many AFH's
find 24/7 awake coverage is necessary for
appropriate levels of care.). A qualified
owner, resident manager or staff member authorized and able to make needed decisions must
be on-site 24 hours per day, seven days a week.
Beyond these baseline requirements, levels of care services will vary from Adult Family Home to
Adult Family Home. Additional services may include:
  • Nursing Care
  • Medication Management
  • Call Buttons
  • In-home Medical and Dental Visits
  • In-Home Beautician and Barber Services
  • Activity Programs
  • Individually-Scheduled Transportation

The Washington State Adult Family Home licenses are renewed annually. The facility must
submit to a full, comprehensive inspection which assesses structural integrity, safe movement
and navigability features, fire safety (inside and out) and ease-of-access for first-responder
vehicles.
Washington State requires providers, resident managers, caregivers, staff and volunteers for
Adult Family Homes to submit to tuberculosis testing within three days of employment. Every
employee and volunteer at Adult Family Homes must undergo a Criminal History Background
Check.
Additionally, Washington State Adult Family Homes must follow an Infection Control System and,
collaboratively with resident and residents' families, construct a negotiated care plan within the
licensing guidelines.
Washington State Adult Family Homes are overseen by the Department of Social and Health
Services. Contact Info:
