Home Care Services
The State of New Mexico grants Home Health
Agency licensing through its Department of
Health's Public Health Facility Licensing and
Certification Bureau.
A Home Health Agency in New Mexico is
defined as a business, entity or organization
primarily engaged in providing medically
directed acute, restorative, rehabilitative,
maintenance, preventative or supportive
services dispensed by professional or
paraprofessional personnel to patients (or
clients) in the service recipient's place of
residence. (Home Health Agencies may also
provide non-medically directed services - if
within the guidelines, rules and regulations
which govern their operations.)
Services a New Mexico licensed Home Health Agency is permitted to provide include: skilled
nursing; physical therapy; occupational therapy; inhalation therapy; infusion therapy; speech
therapy; social work; home health aide services; and personal care attendant and homemaker
services. Home Health Agencies must provide at least one of these services through a direct
employee of the agency; other services may be provided through the home health agency by
way of a contracted service provider.

Area of Service

A New Mexico Home Health Agency may only provide services to patients and clients within a
one hundred (100) mile distance from their licensed agency location. (Some exceptions apply.)

Home Health Agency Administrators

Home Health Agency Administrators in New Mexico are appointed by the agency's governing
body and must meet at least one of the following requirements:
  • Be a licensed physician - or -
  • Be a licensed registered nurse - or -
  • Possess, at minimum, a high school diploma or general equivalency certification along
    with training and experience in health services administration and at least one (1) year of
    supervisory or administrative experience in home health care

Home Health Agency Supervisory Staff

Medically-directed services provided by a Home Health Agency must be supervised by a
licensed professional or an appropriately qualified staff member.

Home Health Agency Staff Requirements

All New Mexico Home Health Agency staff or contracted personnel providing direct care or
services to a patient or client must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and submit to a TB
test.
All health professionals (employed or contracted) must possess a current license, registration
or certification from the State of New Mexico. These professionals include physicians,
physician's assistants, nurse therapy assistants, registered nurses, physical therapists, etc.
Every staff member providing direct care or services to a patient or client must submit to the
State of New Mexico's Caregivers Criminal History Screening Program.
