Las Cruces Assisted Living Facilities
New Mexico Definition of an ALF

The State of New Mexico licenses and governs
Assisted Living Facilities through the New
Mexico Department of Health's Division of
Health Improvement.
New Mexico categorizes Assisted Living
Facilities as any licensed facility which is
operated for the maintenance or care of two
(2) or more adults needing or desiring
assistance with one (1) or more activities of
daily living. (Facilities or homes exempt from
this categorization and required licensing are
those homes which maintain care for a maxium
of two (2) relatives.)
Administrator Requirements

Administrators of Assisted Living Facilities in New Mexico must meet the following pre-requisites:
  • Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age
  • Possess at least a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Comply with the requirements of the New Mexico Caregivers Criminal History Screening
    Program (CCHP)
  • Complete a state-approved certification program for assisted living administrators
  • Be capable of communicating with residents in the language spoken by the majority of
    facility residents
  • Not work while under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs
  • Have documented education and/or experience directly related to the services provided
    by the assisted living facility
  • Provide three (3) notarized letters of reference from persons unrelated to the applicant
  • Comply with the pre-employment requirements pursuant to the Employee Abuse Registry

Staff Requirements

Direct Care Staff in New Mexico Assisted Living Facilities must conform to the following pre-
requisites:
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age
  • Possess adequate education, relevant training, or experience to provide for the needs of
    the facility residents
  • Comply with the pre-employment requirements pursuant to the Employee Abuse Registry
  • Provide current proof (within 6 months) of the Caregivers Criminal History Screening
    Program (CCHP)

Staff Training
  
           New Mexico Assisted Living Facility direct care staff must attend facility-provided
    training and orientation, including a minimum of sixteen (16) hours of supervised training
    prior to being permitted to dispense unsupervised care to the facility residents. An
    additional twelve (12) hours of annual training are also required.

ALF's in New Mexico must provide or make available appropriate recreational and social
activities for the residents. All events and activities must be posted and the residents
encouraged to participate.
The ALF's must either provide residents with transportation or assistance in using public
transportation.
New Mexico ALF's must serve three (3) meals each day at regular times; snacks must be made
freely available.
ALF's in New Mexico must provide a minimum of forty (40) square feet per resident for common
living, dining and social spaces. The dining area must conform to all applicable ADA requlations
and furnishings must be provided to meet the individual needs of the residents.
