The State of Colorado maintains three
classifications for Assisted Living Residences:
classifications for Assisted Living Residences:
- Private Pay
- Alternative Care Facilities (Medicaid-
Certified Assisted Living Residences) - Residential Treatment Facilities
(Intended for residents with severe and
persistent mental illnesses.)
- Any Assisted Living Residence
designed to care for 3 or more residents
must be state licensed by the Colorado
Department of Public Health and
Environment (CDPHE).
Assisted Living Residences provide room, board and at least the following:
Administrator
Assisted Living Residence administrators must be at least 21 years of age and possess either
an acceptable level of combined education and experience - or - complete a state-approved 30-
hour certification program.
Staff
Assisted Living Residence staff members must be at least 18 years of age, earn a Certified First
Aid Certificate and within one month of employment have received training in assessment skills;
infection control; identification and proper handling of difficult behavior and situations; and
resident rights. Administrators and staff members must be fully trained in facility emergency and
fire escape plan procedures.
Criminal Background Checks
The owners, administrators and staff members of an Assisted Living Residence must all submit
to a fingerprint-based criminal background check. If a facility engages contracted staff
members, it is the facility's responsibility to ascertain each contractor on-duty at the facility has
had a criminal background screening performed by their employer.
Amenities and Services
Colorado Assisted Living Residences must provide 3 nutritionally-sound meals per day and
make snacks available throughout the day. Assisted Living Residences must have a minimum of
one full bathroom with appropriate safety provisions (grab bars, non-skid surfaces, etc.) per 6
residents.
